How to make the most of shopping comparison websites

by Daniel J. Gansle

How would you like to compare the price of an item among a number of retailers before you buy it? That’s the idea behind today’s growing number of shopping comparison websites. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of these websites and how you can make the most of them.

Scenario

Let’s say you’re looking to purchase a new Blu-ray video disc player and HDMI 1.3

cable to go along with your slick new 1080p HDTV. You don’t feel like driving around town to a dozen retail stores to compare prices. What do you do? The simplest solution to your problem is to hop online to one of the following price comparison websites to see which retailer will give you the best price on your Blu-ray disc player and HDMI cable.

Shopping.com

Shopping.com makes it easy to compare prices before you buy. On the left-hand side of their home page, under the Home Theater category, click Blu-ray DVD Players to go to the DVD Players page. Select a Blu-ray disc player, then click the Compare Prices button to the right of the product description to go to the full description page for that Blu-ray disc player. Below the description, you’ll see a list of competing retailers and price comparisons. Sorting the results by Low to High will show you the retailer offering the lowest price first.

Epinions.com

Epinions.com is a great website for both price comparisons and reading reviews of a product before you buy it. In the search field at the top of the page, type Blu-ray disc player and click the Search button. Locate the Blu-ray disc player of your choice, then click the Compare Prices button to the right of the product description to see which retailer offers the lowest price. You can sort your results to show you the lowest prices first by clicking the Base Price link at the top of the right-hand column that contains the orange SEE IT buttons.

Amazon.com

Amazon.com provides a robust shopping platform that provides you with not simply price comparisons but also with reviews, technical specifications, and product pairings. Clicking the used & new link on the right-hand side of the product detail page takes you to another page that compares prices amongst a number of online retailers. While you’re ordering your new Blu-ray disc player, you can also pick up an HDMI 1.3 cable at the same time.

Using the internet to compare prices before you buy isn’t just smart, it may also save you money while providing helpful reviews so you know exactly what you’re purchasing.
